Who do we think we are?
Me and Yiri in our bed, Yiri playing a game on his Nintendo DS, me reading a book. On the bed our Siamese cat Boris, moving in his sleep.
Yiri: Look, he’s dreaming!
Boris: gnash gnash
Me: Involuntary muscle contractions, I think…
Yiri: Yeah, you can’t compare a cat brain to our own…
Boris (still sleeping, but getting a bushy tail and moving his paw): Growl! Growow Owow Ow!
Yiri: Boris, wake up!
Me: You’re having a nightmare!
Yiri: Wow, that really looked like he was actually dreaming!
Boris (waking up somewhat): Nyup nyup.
Me: He was definitely angry and scared during his sleep… I thought dreaming was a strictly human phenomenon! A way for our superior brain to process things while asleep…
Boris (settling down to resume sleeping): Lick lick… Hmzzz… Snrk.
Me: Then what is it that sets us humans apart from animals?

part 2: Self-awareness
Molly definitely dreams! Mostly about food and cats…
Hmmmm... I always thought that we humans were a kind of animal. Non-humans most definitely dream... Boris was a cutie, btw, please accept my belated condolences.
